Character Name: Nephrite
Character Canon: Sailor Moon (Original Universe - Anime (sub))
Character Age/Gender: Appears 19 in body, likely older
Canon Point: Post-Death, Episode 24
Character Canon History: Here
Character Personality:
Nephrite, being the second general of the Dark Kingdom, is a loyal member of the Evil Organization whose purpose is to dominate the earth and steal enough human energy to resurrect the Great Evil Ruler. Nephrite's supreme confidence/arrogance in regards to his own standing was shown as he boasted that he would succeed where Jadeite, the first general who was sent to kill Sailor Moon and the Sailor Senshi, had failed. Previous to his interactions with the Sailor Senshi he is seen in heated discussion over his plan to gather energy/achieve the Dark Kingdom's goals with his contemporary/fellow general Zoisite.
His long-standing rivalry with the third general Zoisite shows that he is a man who greatly prides himself on the merit of his own abilities. Nephrite thus feels that he should not receive help from others, and firmly refuses as he considers the offer of help an insult to his abilities. If he were to accept help it would be like admitting to weakness, as if the person who offered it believes he is too weak to be able to manage on his own. This is in part due to the constant skirmishes and the way the members of the Dark Kingdom will stop at nothing to vie for power amongst themselves.
Zoisite especially would constantly interfere with and undermine his plans, trying to make him fall into disfavor with Queen Beryl so that his reputation would be at stake. Zoisite also staged the attack that killed him in order to get a hold of the black crystal that could be used to find the legendary silver crystal, calling Nephrite a traitor and using his affections for Naru as a trap to bait him/exploit his weaknesses. Hence, the ruthlessness and manipulative nature of Zoisite reflect why it would take him some time to warm up to the idea of lowering his guard or becoming comfortable enough to allow someone to help him. Even when assistance is offered with pure intentions, Nephrite can be exceedingly stubborn about accepting it. Hence, he will try and take on situations or powerful opponents by himself even if he cannot handle them on his own.
His show of ego gives him a false air of superiority that indicates he knows more than his betters or his allies, and he tends to become angered when criticized/is not open to suggestions. (Zoisite has used this to his advantage more than once, appearing before him to tell him how his failures were going to earn him the dreaded punishment of "Eternal Sleep" or to pester him about little things enough to make him lose his cool.) This has more than once caused him to get into trouble with Queen Beryl, as well as jeopardize his chances of success.
Nephrite is usually calm and cool-headed, yet he does have a terrible temper. It is mostly reflected when his plans have been questioned or Zoisite is around trying to pester him. At times he will express this as a scowl, or sulking, or raise his voice. He once became so angry that he clutched a letter in his hand and made it burst into flame. He does realize that it is a fault of his, but around Zoisite who constantly goads him Nephrite cannot help but react. He at one point says "I cannot believe I lost my cool to someone as petty as Zoisite." So while he is capable of controlling his anger in times of necessity or is aware that he should, he is passionate enough that he can forget himself when he isn't playing the role of his human alter ego Masato Sanjouin. Even when playing that role however, he allowed his true identity to be discovered during a mission once by becoming excessively irritated at Naru when she would not admit to being Sailor Moon.
Even despite his tendencies to become angered easily, Nephrite is exceedingly clever. Unlike the general before him (Jadeite) Nephrite concentrated on finding the peak of energy from individuals rather than that of a group, using the movement, power, and knowledge of the stars to determine the right moment to steal their energy with a Youma being imbued in certain belongings of those individuals. This took much less effort/maintenance than having to constantly monitor a false business like Jadeite did, as he could sit back and wait until the right moment to steal the energy from afar. Also, unlike most of the other Dark Kingdom minions, Nephrite eventually shows himself capable of thinking for himself. Rather than simply following Queen Beryl's every instruction he does not jump when she tells him to, and makes his own choices. He is even wise enough not to appear before Queen Beryl when she summoned him once when angry as he would have surely been killed on that occasion. When Queen Beryl grew impatient with his failures and asked Nephrite of his progress he impetuously replied: "The universe was not built overnight."
Nephrite is also a man who is capable of wielding great charisma under his alternate earth identity, the human disguise of that of a millionaire entrepreneur, "eccentric coach", and socialite - Masato Sanjouin. Nephrite's deception in using this identity shows that he is at least quite talented in social settings and manipulation if not progressively better at knowing how to get what he wants from others. As Masato Sanjouin he used his good looks and charm to his advantage, using a false kind of gentleness to be soft and could be extremely convincing if not flirtatious with the women he met. This was not done to make them love him, but he did this so that they'd lower their guard and make it easier for him to get what he needed to collect energy or to achieve a goal—such as discovering the identity of Sailor Moon.
This use of his alternate identity was significant as he played the role so well that Usagi/Sailor Moon's friend, Naru Osaka begins to develop feelings for him over time, and at first Nephrite thinks it foolish and scoffs at her naivety, that she should fall into his hands so easily. However, when Naru continues to care for him and is genuinely devoted and kind to him despite him mistreating her on more than one occasion—such as stealing her love energy to the point of her having to go to the hospital, casting her aside so easily, and possibly even endangering her life—Nephrite begins to question her intentions. He thinks it strange that a human girl should react this way, and he doesn't rightly understand it. Feelings such as those were never present in the Dark Kingdom so why should he know how to react to them? Her complete acceptance and love for him eventually begins to change him, Nephrite going out of his way to protect her though he could not rightly say why. This side of himself was even surprising to Nephrite himself, as he'd never before felt the need to be protective over another. He defends her against a youma, and goes so far as to rescue her when baited by Zoisite and the three youma who kidnap her despite knowing it was a trap.
While at first he took advantage of her affections in hopes of using her for his own personal gain, Nephrite slowly came to feel deep affection for her after she showed herself willing to sacrifice her life for him and he developed a gentle side that only she seemed to bring out in him. Despite all his terrible qualities and the fact that he worked for an evil organization, she expressed that even still she would love him. After being shown this love, Nephrite expresses remorse that he had lied to her, and would most likely continue to lie to her over the course of their relationship. Being arguably the most human out of all the generals, with very human emotions that bleed through his duties as a Shitennou, Nephrite came to realize he cared for Naru. Just as Nephrite gradually began to accept that love, and his redemption, if short-lived, made him think of someone else for once rather than himself or his goals, he ends up sacrificing himself to save Naru, taking a blow that would have killed the girl he felt affection for had it pierced her. Come his death he even lamented that he would lie to Naru still, unable to keep his promise of sharing a chocolate parfait with her.

Character Abilities:
✩ Nephrite can commune with the stars, pinpointing the energy of those who are about to reach their highest peak/major turning point in their lives by asking the stars to find them. He can also ask them questions such as "What is Sailor Moon's greatest weakness?" The stars then answer by offering him illusions picturing the answer in the sky.
✩ Can either steal people's energy/life force directly or by putting his mark on any object to increase a person's power to push them towards their highest peak of energy. Once they reach it on Nephrite's order a youma (monster) appears to collect the energy.
✩ Extremely athletic. He can easily flip over tall fences, jump long distances without effort, or evade attacks from Tuxedo Mask or the Sailor Senshi.
✩ He is quite the powerful soldier, able to fight multiple opponents—fending off three youma as well as killing one in a single hit. Nephrite is well-versed in hand-to-hand combat, but can also make a sword/weapon appear in his hand to engage in swordsmanship as well.
✩ Like the rest of the four generals Nephrite has the ability to hover/fly, as well as teleport between Earth and the Dark Kingdom or over long distances such as from the ground to the top of a building.
✩ Using the power of the stars Nephrite is able to make duplicates of himself, though these are likely illusions made to confuse his enemies and to multiply his energy to call down a powerful Youma (or demon/monster) from the stars.
✩ He can magically shoot bursts of energy at people; Or clasp his hands together in a prayer-like formation to send bursts of energy/several meteorites of power raining down on his enemies. Or cross his arms over his chest where nebula-like bursts of light briefly appear to unleash a more powerful, larger force of energy. These attacks are known as Nephrite's "Starlight Attack". These attacks are powerful enough to tear up concrete or destroy property if/when they miss his enemies such as Sailor Moon/the Sailor Senshi.
✩ Nephrite can send a shadow version of himself into another person's body in order to control them. He does this once to Naru in order to send her into a party to steal a legendary treasure he suspects is the ginzuishou or Legendary Silver Crystal for him.
Character Inventory: A tattered Shitennou uniform, a spare change of casual clothes he used when acting as Masato Sanjouin
Samples: The stars knew all, or so he'd always believed. Why then, had he not been given foresight regarding his own fate?
Naru's voice echoed in his ears, screaming for him to live, that he should not die. But he couldn't hold on, the energy in his body had fled, and he'd disappeared from the world in her arms. For a time he could not discern reality from illusion, everything appeared to blur…Should not death be an absolute?
And yet, by some miracle or a strange turn of the wheels of fate, Saeng Seong, the walled city, appeared before him. He stood unsteadily as it loomed, a strange symbol of his failure and of a new existence he would be forced to endure despite his reluctance. Though brought before the Centre for Arrival, and called a "guest", Nephrite was impatient regarding the "check-in" procedures and even less amused regarding their hasty if not vague explanation of how he'd come here. The arrival point for those new guests, the large circular plaza lain with intricate tiles, did not lessen Nephrite's displeasure. Being forced into anything was hardly befitting of someone who once called himself one of the Great Four Generals of the Dark Kingdom.
"Who are you?" Nephrite demanded, his scorn clear at the get-go, his tone scathing and full of mistrust. His temper could easily account for his dismissal of their warnings regarding what he was required to do…His pride would not allow such a pointless endeavor! Was this all some elaborate fabrication set up by the Sailor Senshi to exact revenge? Or was it Queen Beryl-sama or Zoisite somehow? There was no known force that could keep a Shitennou from teleporting out of the city walls; however, to his surprise and confusion, this city appeared to be able to do just that. Although this too had made him even more angry, Nephrite conceded at least that investigation into this phenomenon would be necessary.
"I am one of the Great four of the Dark Kingdom, I do not need anyone to order me around," he had declared, but was once more ignored. Then who or what exactly was responsible for this? Perish the thought that another could hold such power over him without his permission! Before long he was directed into the First District, to the residential apartments, where he was assigned a room. This had to be planned, but what it would amount to not even someone like Nephrite could rightly discern.
